Cleaning Yellowed Plastic
Just imagine if we didn't have plastics, and many different products that we use daily are made from plastic. Plastics are in our workplace, at our homes, and everywhere in our lives. Plastics have helped us progress our societies immensely, cleaning yellowed plastic can be a tremendous headache though. What should we use to clean plastic, in what ways can we clean plastic?
One great thing about plastics is how they maintain for a long time and stay can last for a long time. Plastic really doesn't need a whole lot of attention or maintenance and typically only requires some cleaning now and then. Proper cleaning starts with the type of plastic products you are dealing with. The best thing to do is start cleaning your plastic with a warm rinse. Don't use cold water, cold water doesn't do a good job of breaking down and removing bacteria.
Start by rubbing the product with hot water, as well as a dish rag. Right now isn't the best time to use soap as you are only rinsing the product. Don't use a hard brush as you'll scratch the service and possibly cause permanent damage. After rubbing the products with warm water you will want to begin by introducing a cleaning compound to the device. Be sure to use a non acidic and non alkaline type of cleaning solution as an acidic or alkaline as it will eventually break down your plastics causing them to be less durable. Soaps are the best solution, or specialized cleaning solutions from the store. At this time you want to create a mixture of both warm water and your cleaning solution. Since you've already started getting your products clean, the dirt and grunge will begin to come off extremely easily.
If you happen to be cleaning a smaller object you will not want to put it in the dishwasher, dishwashers will heat up to levels that are too hot for most commercial plastics. As with most plastics when you begin to heat them up tremendously they will get hot and melt. Avoid putting plastics in clothes washers, dishwashers or any type of boiling water. Hot temperatures of water is what can destroy plastic. Also resist techniques to dry your plastics that require a tremendous amount of heat, such as hair dries, microwaves, or ovens. Nearly all plastic will be ruined at a certain temperature.
If you are cleaning larger plastic chairs, the best solution is to use a different type of cleaner. Use a bleach and warm water solution. Begin again by spraying the chairs prior with a hose or some form of water to help begin the break down process of the dirt. Once you've done an initial spray, which will help the cleaning process, start by spraying the warm bleach water mixture on the chairs. At this point things may start getting dirty, star brushing or using your sponge on the chairs using a decent amount of the hot water and bleach blend. When cleaning yellowed plastic we typically suggest let the cleaning solution sit for five minutes, at which point the chairs will need a final rinse. At this point you don't have to worry about getting your clothes dirty every time you go to sit down on them.
It doesn't matter what type of plastics you'll be cleaning as the rules apply to all types, if you want to maintain your plastics stick with these basic rules. At the end of the day your plastics won't last long if you don't do the necessary things to maintain them.
