Cleaning Plastic

Plastics are everywhere in our lives, and many different products that we use daily are made from plastic. Whether its plastics found in toys, food containers, or even playing cards it. Plastics have helped us progress our societies immensely, but one of the biggest problems we have is cleaning plastic. What type of products do we use, and what are the best plastic cleaning methods?

The good thing about plastics is that if maintained and cleaned they can last for a very long time to come. Plastics is something that usually doesn't need a lot to maintained other than a little bit of cleaning now and then. Proper cleaning starts with the type of plastic products you are dealing with. First and foremost you'll want to use warm to hot water to give plastics an initial cleaning. Don't use cold water, as cold water doesn't do a good job at cleaning and leaves germs and bacteria.

Begin by rubbing the product with hot water, and a dish rag or sponge. Don't use any soap at this time as you are trying to agitate the dirt and help the overall cleaning process. Depending on the type of plastic you'll want to rub a non-abrasive cloth on the product. After rubbing the products with warm water you will want to begin by introducing a cleaning compound to the device. Be sure to use a non acidic and non alkaline type of cleaning solution as an acidic or alkaline as it will eventually break down your plastics causing them to be less durable. You can use soaps, or specialized cleaning solutions from the store. Use warmer water again and create a small mixture of water and cleaning solution and start by rubbing down the product again. Since you've already started getting your products clean, the dirt and grunge will begin to come off extremely easily.

If you are cleaning a smaller plastic you will not want to put it into the dishwasher, as the dishwasher is designed to heat to a very hot temperature which could eventually jeopardize the integrity of your plastics. Heating plastics to very hot temperatures will make them bendable which you don't want in this type of situation. Avoid putting plastics in clothes washers, dishwashers or any type of boiling water. Boiling water is plastics worst nightmare. Also resist techniques to dry your plastics that require a tremendous amount of heat, such as hair dries, microwaves, or ovens. A lot of direct heat on plastics will ruin the plastics as well.

If you are cleaning larger plastic chairs, you'll want to use a different type of solution. Create a mixture of warm water and a bleach based cleaner. Begin again by spraying the chairs prior with a hose or some form of water to help begin the break down process of the dirt. Once you've done an initial spray, which will help the cleaning process, start by spraying the warm bleach water mixture on the chairs. At this time it's time to start getting dirty, use a sponge or scrub brush and dip it into the warm water bleach solution and begin scrubbing the chairs. When cleaning plastics we typically suggest let the cleaning solution sit for five minutes, faster which the dirt will really begin to break down. After those five minutes begin to hose down the chairs and the dirt should be completely removed.

Whatever plastics you end up cleaning be sure to stick to these key principles, otherwise you may have some extremely adverse affects. The plastic that you may want to maintain will eventually begin to break down and it'll never be the same.
